Text and Image

This two-day workshop will examine the relationship between text and image
in the conceptualization and construction of our film-video work. We will
look at historical and contemporary examples of experimental moving image,
and we will also track the trajectory of avant-garde movements that have
utilized text as image. Notable movements include Futurism, Dada,
Surrealism, and Conceptualism. We will see language as not simply a tool to
explain, nor image a tool to illustrate, but investigate how the partnership
between them can yield greater meaning in the development of our conceptual
film-video work. The workshop will include simple writing exercises,
storyboarding strategies, and, time permitting, the execution of some short
video works. Students should come prepared with a notebook. Workshop will be
conducted in English.
